Seattle History
In 1951 people starting coming to Seattle and first called it New York. Then Henry Yesler made a lumber mill in Seattle and the industry boomed. In the 1970s they discovered oil at Lake Washington. Seattle was gaining about 1,000 new residence every month! The population growth slowed but did not stop when a devastating fire on June 6th, 1889. With the population at more than 440,000 people the city celebrated with an international fair in 1909. World War I transformed the cities Shipbuilding industry which turned out to be 20% of the nations wartime ship tonnage. The depression of the 1930s hit Seattle hard but World War II sparked of interest in the economy when the shipbuilding industry boomed once again. Now Seattle is a tourist sanctuary because of all the things you can discover like the space needle! Seattle is also famous for their football team "The Seattle Sea Hawks.
